GIS and Cartographic Services
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer technology capable of creating, managing, and working with geographic data. Common GIS tools include data editing, management, geographic analysis, and map making. GIS is used by many industries and agencies to help plan, design, and maintain digital information infrastructures. Common users include but are not restricted to the following organizations: agriculture, forestry, health, petroleum, city planners, environment, land-use planners, military, insurance, real-estate, marketing, transportation.
Examples of some of our past and ongoing projects:
- Local and Organic Food - by analyzing the current food network, we can understand the impact of food miles on the local economy, how many geographically separated markets producers serve, where gaps in local markets may occur, and how the existing network may affect the availability of locally grown food to the Illinois consumer.
- Mid-west Flooding - due to heavy rains in June and July of 2008 many counties in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin were flooded. With the U.S. and Illinois State Geological Surveys GEOMAP is processing and analyzing imagery collected by satellites. This work will help define the geographic extent of the flood that is critical in the assessment of its impact.
- Health Sciences - Radon Awareness Program - mapping and demographic analysis of McLean County radon awareness.
- East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging (ECIAA) - using GIS technology to promote the development of livable communities where citizens can age in place successfully.
The Stevenson Center and GEOMAP of Illinois State University collaboratively offer GIS services to communities and agencies in the state.
Training in the use of GIS and Remote Sensing technology is also offered through GEOMAP.
