Educating Illinois, 2008-2014: Priorities for Illinois’ First Public University
Educating Illinois, 2008-2014 is Illinois State University’s strategic plan. The Mission, Core Values, Goals, and Strategies are designed to build on the University’s strengths as it advances education in the state.
Very relevant for the Stevenson Center is the plan’s emphasis on the value of Civic Engagement.
As stated: “Illinois State University prepares students to be informed and engaged citizens who will promote and further the collective goals of society. The University promotes active learning experiences through which students will gain an awareness and understanding of civic engagement as a lifelong responsibility. Furthermore, the University encourages faculty and staff to serve as engaged civic leaders and role models promoting the quality of life for all citizens through collaborative and individual action.”
The Mission of the Stevenson Center complements this emphasis on civic engagement. Before they arrive on campus the Center’s students are already oriented to careers in public service. The curriculum and internship experiences provide the tools they need to advance that interest professionally. Further, the faculty and staff associated with the Center engage in direct service to communities. Thus, the Stevenson Center serves as a model of civic engagement.
Here are a few quotes from Educating Illinois, 2008-2014. We see these as mirrors of what the Center tries to accomplish.
“We devote all of our resources and energies to creating the most supportive and productive community possible to serve the citizens of Illinois and beyond.”
The Stevenson Center “…partners with business, industry, government, and education providing leadership in statewide, national, and international initiatives; expanding service and outreach; and enhancing financial support for instructional, scholarship, and service activities.”
The Stevenson Center “…prepares students to be informed and engaged citizens who will promote and further the collective goals of society.”
We expand “…international linkages to provide more opportunities for students to study abroad and to complete international internships.”
